Faster to market together

The Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) has developed a new alkaline pressure electrolyzer for industrial use with measurement technology from Endress+Hauser

The CE-certified system demonstrator is based on alkaline pressure electrolysis echnology researched, developed, and optimized by ZSW. It has an electrical connection capacity of 1 megawatt and a production capacity of around 20 kg of hydrogen per hour with an efficiency of approximately 70 %. Thanks to its modular design, the plant can be easily scaled to double-digit megawatt power classes. Over 40 Endress+Hauser measuring devices ensure the safety and high level of efficiency of the process.

The Result

  • The system demonstrator has been in test operation at ZSW since mid-2023.

  • The globally positioned system integrator Ecoclean from Filderstadt is currently developing and launching an internationally competitive electrolysis system based on the demonstrator.

The challenge

Green hydrogen is considered key to the decarbonization of many sectors. However, this requires accelerating the market ramp-up of electrolysis technology. ZSW has taken on this challenge – and demonstrated that it can be done particularly efficiently when research institutes and industry pool their expertise: Together with 40 companies, it has developed a scalable, series-ready alkaline pressure electrolyzer in just two years as part of the joint project “Electrolysis made in Baden-Württemberg” funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Our solution

Endress+Hauser contributed more than 40 measuring instruments for liquid analysis and for monitoring flow, temperature, pressure, and level from its extensive product portfolio for critical process measurement points in hydrogen production. Endress+Hauser's measurement technology meets all these requirements. In addition, installation and commissioning are simple and straightforward. Heartbeat Technology also enables continuous diagnosis and verification of the measuring points, thereby increasing plant availability.
