What is a Coriolis flowmeter?

A Coriolis mass flowmeter is a measuring device that determines mass flow directly by detecting the twisting motion of vibrating measuring tubes caused by the moving fluid. In addition to mass flow, it can simultaneously provide further process variables such as density and temperature.

Coriolis measuring technology provides highly accurate mass flow measurement, independent of fluid properties or flow profile, making it a powerful solution for modern process control, quality assurance and plant safety.

What are the benefits of Coriolis technology?

The multivariable results provided by Coriolis technology lead to deeper insight into processes and optimize efficiency across a wide range of industries and applications. Significant benefits of Coriolis in today’s process industries are for example:

  • Universal applicability across liquids and gases: Coriolis mass flow meters measure liquids, gases and challenging media, including viscous, non-conductive and multiphase fluids. A single technology can therefore support a wide range of processes and applications.
  • Direct mass flow measurement with maximum accuracy: By measuring mass flow directly, Coriolis flowmeters eliminate the need for volume-to-mass conversion and deliver highly accurate, reliable measurement results for process control, quality assurance and custody transfer.
  • Multivariable measurement in one device: Beyond mass flow, Coriolis flowmeters simultaneously provide key process variables such as density, temperature and, in some applications, viscosity. This additional process insight supports product quality, process optimization and operational efficiency.
  • Reliable performance under changing process conditions: Because the measuring principle is largely independent of fluid properties and flow profile, Coriolis flowmeters are equipped to maintain stable measurement performance even when process conditions vary. This makes them particularly suitable for demanding applications such as hydrogen measurement and Power-to-X processes.
  • Flexible installation with reduced engineering effort: Coriolis flowmeters require no inlet and outlet runs, allowing compact installation and simplified plant integration even where installation space is limited.

What can a Coriolis flowmeter measure?

Coriolis flow measurement is used in a wide range of industries and industrial processes where high accuracy and reliable process data are essential, supporting measurement and automation solutions. Key industries and application areas include:

Typical applications range from dosing, filling and quality control to custody transfer processes, where precise and traceable measurement is critical for billing.

Coriolis flowmeters can measure virtually all fluids, from liquids and viscous media to gases and liquefied gases. Common examples include cleaning agents, fuels, vegetable oils, latex, alcohol, fruit solutions, toothpaste and ketchup. Depending on the application, Coriolis flowmeters can meet specific requirements such as hygienic process design, safe handling of hazardous media or reliable measurement under changing process conditions.

When is a Coriolis flowmeter the best choice?

A Coriolis flowmeter is a multivariable measuring device used for the direct measurement of mass flow. Unlike many other flow measurement technologies, it measures mass flow directly and simultaneously provides additional process variables.

Coriolis flowmeters are typically the preferred choice when high measurement accuracy, direct mass flow measurement and additional process insight are required. They are particularly suitable for applications where:

  • Maximum measurement accuracy is required, for example in custody transfer or high-value fluids
  • Direct mass flow measurement is preferred over calculated values
  • Additional process variables such as density, temperature or concentration are needed for process optimization
  • Fluids are complex, variable or difficult to measure, including viscous, multiphase or non-conductive media
  • Reliable process data is required under changing operating conditions
  • Installation space is limited and flexible mounting without inlet or outlet runs is beneficial

In many demanding scenarios, Coriolis technology is considered a benchmark for precise and reliable flow measurement; where specific process conditions such as very high flow rates, large pipe diameters or less stringent accuracy requirements call for a different approach, Endress+Hauser can draw on a broad flowmeter portfolio to match the measuring principle to the application.

How does the Coriolis flow measuring principle work?

A Coriolis flow meter measures mass flow based on the phase shift of vibrating tubes caused by fluid motion. The measuring tubes are continuously excited to oscillate, and the flowing fluid creates a measurable twisting effect that is directly proportional to the mass flow rate.

At the same time, the device provides additional process information:

  • The oscillation frequency enables accurate measurement of fluid density
  • Integrated temperature sensors compensate thermal influences and provide temperature measurement

This multivariable measuring principle enables stable and precise process monitoring in a single device.

Beyond direct mass flow measurement, Coriolis technology uses the same measuring point to generate additional process data. Density, temperature and calculated values such as concentration or solids content make it possible to monitor product quality inline and understand process changes in real time.

This turns the flowmeter from a measuring device into a source of potential process insight — and creates the basis for advanced functions such as diagnostics, verification and application-specific performance support.

How Endress+Hauser expands Coriolis measurement beyond flow data

Endress+Hauser builds on the strengths of Coriolis technology by turning precise measurement values into application-relevant process insight. With the Proline Promass portfolio, Coriolis flow measurement is not limited to mass flow, density and temperature. It becomes a basis for understanding product quality, detecting process changes and making measurement results more reliable in real operating conditions.

This starts with a broad portfolio designed for specific application needs. Whether the focus is certified accuracy in custody transfer, hygienic design in food, beverage and life sciences, reliable measurement in hydrogen and Power-to-X processes or stable performance in demanding media, Endress+Hauser offers Coriolis solutions that match the measuring task to the process. For applications with stringent regulatory and hygienic requirements, particularly in the food and beverage and life sciences industries, dedicated sensor variants enable reliable cleanability (CIP/SIP) and support compliance with industry standards.

Beyond the sensor itself, application-specific functions extend what Coriolis measurement can do in challenging conditions. Technologies such as Gas Fraction Handler and Multi-Frequency Technology help maintain reliable measurement when entrained gas or finely distributed microbubbles would otherwise make measurement more difficult. In this way, Coriolis measurement becomes more robust where process conditions are dynamic or non-ideal.

At the same time, Heartbeat Technology adds a further layer of confidence. Integrated diagnostics, verification and process monitoring help users assess device health, support long-term measurement reliability and reduce the need for interruptions during operation. This shifts Coriolis measurement from a single measuring point to a continuous source of information about device and process performance.

The value of this data increases when it can be used in digital process environments. Measurement, diagnostic and verification data can be integrated into higher-level systems and used for process optimization, maintenance planning and greater operational transparency.

With international approvals, calibration capabilities and deep application expertise, Endress+Hauser supports users worldwide in selecting and operating the right Coriolis solution for their process.
